Honoring America’s Bravest

Members of Antioch Volunteer Fire Department had a one-of-a-kind opportunity to serve the community earlier this month:  we were invited to stand alongside soldiers, veterans and other members of the community to honor wounded veteran Sergeant 1st Class (SFC) Michael Schlitz during a groundbreaking ceremony for his new home here in Fortson.

The Gary Sinise Foundation and the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation created a strategic partnership program called “Building for America’s Bravest” which, among others things, primarily builds homes for severely wounded veterans.  In just a few short months, SFC Schlitz will have a state-of-the-art facility to cater to his needs.

Schlitz’s home is still $300,000 short of budget, so they are asking for your help to get it complete. You can contribute to his project by visiting the below website:

Some time in July, as the home nears completion, there will be a Community Day for landscaping, finishing touches and a grand-opening.  Hopefully, members of Antioch Volunteer Fire Department will be able to honor SFC Schlitz by attending on that day as well.
